For many of us, personal space is at a premium these days. If you’re finding yourself overwhelmed, stressed, or burned out, it’s time to create more peace at home. Since we’re spending so much time indoors, even small shifts like moving a candle to your nightstand or trying a new tea blend can go a long way in enhancing your sense of calm.
We reached out to two wellness gurus, Maggie MacDonald and Gretchen Geraghty, who shared lots of tips and suggestions for creating a peaceful space.
Incorporating a few additions like candles or essential oils are easy ways to elevate your space.
“I’m really big on energy and how I feel, so setting my space and making it peaceful is extremely important to me. I love boosting my mood with citrus essential oils in the morning and setting a spa mood at night time—eucalyptus and lavender help me wind down after a busy day. Also, just having a clean space is essential. It costs nothing and will transform your mood and mind.”

“In my ideal peaceful space I have my favorite candle burning, with a big hydro flask filled with ice water. It’s quiet with no distractions, and I can unwind on my computer, FaceTiming family, or by reading.”

Need ideas on how to navigate sharing a space with family members, roommates, or significant others? Here’s how to do it without stepping on anyone’s toes.
“Having your own sanctuary that feels comfortable and relaxing can be difficult when sharing our space. Forming a strong routine can help keep you busy. Also, getting out of the house and enjoying fresh air allows your mind and body to open up, and being with yourself helps a ton. For your space itself, if you have your own room, decorating it with personal touches will immediately transform the atmosphere. I love keeping my room relaxing and clean.”
—Maggie
“Taking time to be independent and do things on your own helps a lot, whether it’s going on a run by yourself, taking a drive, or a bath. Then you appreciate your moments together more.”
—Gretchen
Both women agree that time spent offline is a key way to make space for peace.

Turns out, you might not need to make any big purchases to impact your space—just find a new perspective.
“If something doesn’t bring value and joy to my life, I get rid of it. Once your space is clean and organized, add pretty flowers, open the windows to let in fresh air, and light a candle!”
—Maggie
“First clean out and organize—that’ll make you feel so much better and know what you’re working with. After that, rearranging your space with what you have can totally be a refresh in your environment and mindset!”
