Healthy Drink Recipes

Last Update: August 11, 2023

Eating healthy is a great way to load up on the nutrients your body needs, but did you know you can drink healthy, too? Amping up your beverages with healthy ingredients is a great way to boost your vitamin and mineral intake each day—think adding apple cider vinegar to your next glass of water, or stirring some collagen into your coffee. From shots and smoothies to lattes, tonics, teas, and more, we’ve rounded up plenty of options to help you sip your way to wellness.

What are healthy drinks?

The short answer is that healthy drinks are beverages (including water) that keep you hydrated and boast nourishing ingredients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy enzymes, and more—all of which can be easily incorporated into your diet. Some examples of good-for-you beverages include teas (green, mint, or ginger), protein-rich smoothies, wellness shots (more on that below), tonics, elixirs, and switchels.

What are wellness shots?

Wellness shots are healthy powerhouses that deliver a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals, aneo healthy hair and skin, and more. Feeling a cold coming on? Consider blending immunity-boosting ginger with lemon and antimicrobial honey. Want to get your digestion back on track, or feeling sluggish after a particularly grueling workout? Try a turmeric shot. Need to load up on vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, iron, calcium, and magnesium? Go green with a wheatgrass shot. The frequency at which you take wellness shots is up to you; most are safe to consume daily or as needed.

Is drinking apple cider vinegar healthy?

There are many benefits to this fermented liquid made from—you guessed it—apples. For starters, ACV contains healthy bacteria and enzymes that work to promote good digestion. It also contains acetic acid, which can help the body effectively absorb minerals in food. With lots of ACV recipes to choose from, it’s easy to incorporate this wellness booster into your diet as a shot, added to water, or stirred into broth.

Healthy Alcoholic Drinks

Most clean-eating diets suggest abstaining from alcohol consumption altogether, but when we’re not on a detox plan, many of us may partake in the occasional alcoholic beverage. In these instances, you may want to opt for a “healthier” cocktail. Avoid mixers that contain extra sugar or empty calories, or try cutting mixers in half by adding sparkling water. Consider wine, which may contain the antioxidant resveratrol, over hard alcohol, and be sure to drink water between each alcoholic beverage to avoid dehydration.

Tips for Drinking More Water

Staying well-hydrated is a key component to good health, but making sure you drink enough water each day can sometimes be challenging. How much water should you drink a day? For a long time, the common rule was to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day (64 ounces total). But this recommendation has been revised to be more gender-specific: Men are now advised to drink roughly 13 cups per day, while women should aim for at least nine cups each day. However, these are only guidelines. Listen to your body so you can ensure it gets the hydration it needs every day.

Here are some tips for increasing your water intake on the daily:

  • Invest in a reusable water bottle and keep it on hand throughout the day
  • Drink a glass of water after every bathroom break
  • Try infusing your water with lemon, cucumber, berries, or mint for more flavor
  • Opt for sparkling water over soda
