Like most of us, Chris Feuille, founder of Ona Treats, has a serious sweet tooth. His seemingly innocent love for sugar, however, took him down a path of not-so-sweet suffering that many snackers may also be headed down if they have hidden food allergies.
In 2009, Feuille, felt "like crap," he admits. After seeing dozens of doctors and having every blood test and X-ray under the sun, there was still no diagnosis: "They kept telling me I was the healthiest man around, but I was in terrible pain."
After years of discouragement and discomfort, he found a doctor who tested him for food allergies and other intestinal issues, and introduced him to the GAPS diet. Short for "Gut and Psychology Syndrome," this diet has been recommended for patients with severe digestive issues including chronic diarrhea, IBS, Crohn’s, gastritis, and ulcerative colitis, as well as patients with severe neurological conditions.
"I did the Introduction Diet," explains Feuille, "then slowly started incorporating meats and vegetables in my diet, [as well as] nuts, fruits, and some carb-type foods like sweet potatoes and squashes."
While Feuille started feeling really great, he admits he was missing something very dear to his heart: TREATS! "I wanted to create replacements for the foods I loved so much and missed but couldn't eat," he says.
After some experimenting in the kitchen, in 2012, he and his wife Anna founded Ona Treats, a line of health-conscious bars and cookies that focus first and foremost on taste. "Most bar companies are looking to meet a specific percentage for the amount of protein or carbs—but not us," Feuille shares, "We're looking for great flavor."
The secret to Ona Treats' success is antioxidant-rich, all-natural honey, the only sweetener allowed on the GAPS diet. "Honey is digested more slowly than other sugars [and] feeds good bacteria in the gut," says Feuille. Unlike with processed sugar, you won't experience inflammation of the gut or have huge spikes in energy levels.
Whether you're sugar-addicted, sugar-intolerant, or both, you'll love Ona Treats' line of mouthwatering, can't-believe-they're-good-for-you bars and cookies, in flavors like Coconut Shortbread Honey, Maple Pecan Honey, Brownie Honey, and Chocolate Chip.
