Using Walnut To Fix Wood Scratches

Last Update: March 11, 2020

Thrift store enthusiasts and DIY decorators, listen up: We’ve got a trick up our sleeve that could change the home furniture game.

Don’t say farewell to that gorgeous antique trunk marred by an ugly scratch, or resign yourself to refinishing grandma’s coffee table after the mover’s dinged it up. Instead, turn to a pantry staple—walnuts—to cover up scratches and blemishes in just a few minutes. With this tip at your disposal, you can extend the life of wood pieces at home for little to no cash.

Here’s how it works: Rub a raw walnut back and forth across the length of the scratch for about 30 seconds. Leave the scratch alone for two to three minutes while the oil from the nut seeps into the wood. This should help heal the scratch. Then, using a soft microfiber cloth, gently polish the scratched area.

Step back and admire your handiwork: the mark should be much less noticeable, and the surface will look as good as new!
