If you’re someone who thinks pink when the weather warms up, then you know the unofficial wine of summer has to be rosé. This varietal has a history that dates back to the sixth century when Phocaeans brought vines from Greece to modern-day Marseille in Southern France. Today, it’s made using a range of grape varietals like Grenache, Pinot Noir, or Syrah, and the pale hue is the result of red grape skins fermenting for a brief time, usually only a few hours.
If you talk with Jean-Pierre Py, he’ll tell you that winemaking is in his blood. Py’s grandfather worked as a local wine merchant for many years and owned property in France near the village of Douzens, which is nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees mountains. In 2003, Py began upgrading his grandfather’s winery and converting more than 300 acres of land to organic parcels, which has now received organic certification. “Terroir is our heritage and our strength,” he says. “I respect it, and believe in preserving it.”
In addition to drinkability, here are a few of the standards you’ll find in every bottle from Domaine Py.
