Once your baby turns one year old, many pediatricians start to recommend introducing cow’s milk. But what happens when cow’s milk just doesn’t agree with your newly minted toddler’s digestion?

In these instances, many parents wonder about the benefits of alternative milks like goat milk. We spoke to Elke Pascoe, mother of three and founder of LittleOak, a New Zealand-based company making goat milk formula for babies and toddlers of all ages.

According to Pascoe, New Zealand is home to some of the most environmentally conscious farming practices in the world. On their farm in Palmerston North, their grass-fed goats living in the rolling hills are raised according to organic farming practices. They’re milked daily in small batches, and it’s that fresh, whole goat milk that is used in LittleOak formula. Every batch of LittleOak goat milk formula is also crafted under the strict oversight of Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), widely recognised as setting the highest food safety and quality standards in the world.

Are you considering making the switch from cow’s milk to goat’s milk for your toddler? We spoke to Pascoe to learn more about the benefits of goat milk for toddlers, how she runs LittleOak with honesty and integrity, and how she’s working to help make the formula industry more transparent for all families.

Goat Milk FAQs: What You Need to Know About Goat Milk for Toddlers With LittleOak Founder Elke Pascoe

Goat milk is often described as easier to digest than cow milk. Can you explain the science behind that?

“Absolutely. Goat milk is easier to digest because its natural composition is closer to human breast milk than many other mammalian milks in several important ways. Milk oligosaccharides (MOs) are natural, complex carbohydrates found in all types of milk, and they play an important role in supporting the gut microbiome. Goat milk contains a greater variety of MOs than cow milk and also shares at least 12 of the same MOs as breast milk. This means that goat milk is actually digested in a similar fashion to breast milk itself.

Goat milk also has a different fat composition to cow milk. It naturally contains more medium-chain fatty acids, which are smaller and easier for the body to digest than the long-chain fatty acids found in cow milk. Because of this, the fats in goat milk are gentler and easier for babies to digest.”

How does the protein structure in goat’s milk differ from cow’s milk, and why does that matter for babies?

“Cow milk is high in A1 protein, which can be harder for babies to digest. In fact, during digestion, A1 proteins can form a firmer curd in the stomach and may also trigger digestive discomfort or an immune reaction. Goat milk, on the other hand, is naturally higher in the smaller A2 protein, which forms a softer curd in the stomach and is much gentler on the digestive system. Because goat milk is high in the A2 protein and is closer in composition to breast milk, it is often more gentle on the digestive system, making it easier for babies to tolerate compared with traditional cow milk.”

For babies who struggle with mild cow milk intolerance, could goat milk be an

alternative?

“Yes, goat milk can be a gentle alternative for many babies. Mild cow milk intolerance often shows up as digestive discomfort, eczema, or skin reactions, and in these cases, families often find goat milk easier to digest. Research also suggests that goat milk can support beneficial gut bacteria and help maintain a healthy gut barrier, which may reduce allergic reactions and improve tolerance.”

What advice would you give parents who are considering making the switch to goat’s milk?

Be an advocate for your baby. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share what you’ve learned about goat milk and its potential benefits. There are still some healthcare professionals who are catching up on the research or may not be fully aware of how goat milk differs from cow milk. If your baby is experiencing digestive issues, mild intolerance, or skin reactions with cow milk or cow milk formula, goat milk could be a really beautiful alternative. I also want to add that as parents, we’re often told that colic, upset tummies, or skin problems are just “normal,” but they really aren’t. These signs often point to issues with gut health and the formula your baby is on, so trust what you notice, listen to your baby’s needs and don’t be afraid to speak up for your child.”

What signs might indicate that a baby is thriving on goat milk formula?

“We see so many incredible transformations from families using LittleOak. Just the other day, I met a parent in New Zealand whose baby had severe eczema all over his body. It was really distressing for them. I suggested trying LittleOak, and she reached out to me a week later. His skin had cleared almost completely — it was honestly incredible. This is what should feel “normal.” Babies and toddlers shouldn’t have to struggle with gut issues or skin problems. When they’re thriving, their tummies are settled, their skin is healthy, and they’re generally more comfortable and happy.”

Is goat milk formula suitable for toddlers?

“Absolutely. As a mom, I know how tricky toddlerhood can be — little ones are often picky eaters, and it’s hard to make sure they’re getting all the nutrients they need during this period of rapid growth and development. Our toddler milk helps fill nutritional gaps by providing clean protein, healthy fats, and 16 essential vitamins and minerals — including iron, calcium, magnesium, and DHA — without added sugars, synthetics, or processed oils. By complementing a toddler’s solid food diet, it helps support healthy brain development, strong bones, and overall well-being, giving parents peace of mind that their little ones are getting the nutrition they need to grow and thrive.”

Can you explain how Little Oak’s ingredients are different from other formulas?

“I started this little business because I simply could not find a formula that I felt comfortable feeding my own child. LittleOak is made from fresh, whole New Zealand goat milk and carefully crafted in small batches using our gentle, “less-is-more” process. Unlike standard formulas, which start with processed skim milk powder, we use fresh milk straight from our own farm. This allows us to retain the natural nutrition of the milk and use up to 25% fewer ingredients than standard brands.

We are uncompromising in our commitment to using the cleanest, most natural ingredients. That’s why LittleOak is free from GMOs, unnecessary synthetics, and chemically extracted oils. We were the first formula in the world to replace standard canola oil with cold-pressed flaxseed oil, the first to be certified 100% palm oil free, and will soon be replacing high oleic sunflower oil with cold-pressed olive oil. Every ingredient is chosen carefully with no shortcuts and no compromises so every baby and toddler gets the most natural, wholesome nutrition possible.”

What would you say to parents who are concerned about recent formula recalls?

“As a mom, I know how stressful all the recent news about formula recalls has been for many families. No parent should ever have to second-guess the nutrition they give their child. That’s why I started LittleOak — because I wanted a formula I could feel completely confident giving my own baby. And I want every parent reading this to know that your little one is completely safe with LittleOak. Our fresh, whole New Zealand goat milk comes straight from our grass-fed goats, and every batch is made under strict safety and quality standards. New Zealand is globally recognised for its pristine environment and the most rigorous food safety regulations in the world. Every batch is tested for pathogens, heavy metals, and contaminants, and our production is independently audited to ensure the highest safety standards.

When things like this happen in our industry, I think it’s so important to provide reassurance. With LittleOak, your baby is safe, nourished, and supported every step of the way. That’s our promise, and it’s my promise. LittleOak isn’t a multinational run by distant shareholders. We are a company built by a mom and completely committed to the wellbeing of children everywhere.”
