At Thrive Market, we believe that healthy food is a priority, not a privilege — but we also know that grocery shopping has gotten very expensive. For anyone who cares deeply about buying non-GMO groceries, the bill can feel even higher.
That’s exactly the type of problem we set out to solve. A Thrive Market membership means that shoppers who genuinely want to eat healthier don’t have to compromise on their values, including buying non-GMO foods. Here’s how we keep the prices low on non-GMO groceries—from pantry staples to kids’ snacks to pre-made frozen meals—and some of our favorite non-GMO products to add to your next order.
What Does Non-GMO Mean?
Non-GMO means the food was produced without genetically modified organisms (organisms whose DNA has been altered in a lab to introduce traits not found in nature). This could include things like pest resistance or faster growth.
The most common GMO crops in the US are corn, soy, canola, sugar beets, and cotton. This applies not just to those crops themselves, but also to processed or packaged foods that contain them as ingredients.
Here are a few more things to know about non-GMO foods:
- Non-GMO ≠ organic. Organic certification requires a product to be non-GMO, but a product can be non-GMO without being organic. (With this in mind, if you’re only concerned with finding non-GMO products, you could look for either the non-GMO certification or the organic certification.)
- The “Non-GMO Project Verified” label is the most recognized third-party certification in the US. The Non-GMO Project is a nonprofit organization that operates a third-party verification system to ensure products are free of genetically modified organisms.
- If non-GMO foods are out of your budget, it’s worth knowing that the FDA still considers approved GMO foods safe to eat—the non-GMO preference is more about transparency, environmental concerns, and personal values than a proven health risk.
Why Are Non-GMO Groceries More Expensive?
At many grocery stores, non-GMO products are often priced higher because of the extra effort required to produce and certify them. For farmers, crop yields are also often much lower on non-GMO fruits and vegetables than on conventionally grown crops.
At Thrive Market, we’re able to keep prices low on non-GMO groceries because of our membership model (which you can learn more about below).
How Can a Thrive Market Membership Help You Save on Non-GMO Groceries?
Quality and sourcing are our main priorities — along with making sure food access doesn’t depend on your zip code or your income.
