We’re celebrating our fourth year as a B Corp, or a company that meets high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. It’s one of our proudest achievements as a mission-driven company, and it’s one that we’re constantly striving to improve upon — and this year, we did just that.
We’re incredibly proud to announce that in our fourth year, we were eligible for recertification, which allows B Corp companies to showcase the improvements they’ve made over the last three years. During the recertification process, we were able to raise our B Impact Score (the scale used to determine a company’s eligibility for B Corp certification) by 33%.
In order to measure our B Impact Score, Thrive Market underwent a rigorous third-party assessment, earning points for our achievements in the following 5 areas:
We recently became a Public Benefit Corporation, which enabled us to show the world that we’re serious about making healthy and sustainable living easy and affordable for everyone.
A Public Benefit Corporation is a company that:
This evaluates a company’s overall environmental management practices as well as its impact on the air, climate, water, land, and biodiversity. This includes the direct impact of a company’s operations, supply chain and distribution channels, and recognizes companies with environmentally innovative production processes and those that sell products or services that have a positive environmental impact.
Since becoming a certified B Corp, we’ve become Climate Neutral Certified through measuring, reducing, and compensating for 100% of carbon emissions generated from making and delivering our products. All Thrive Market warehouses are also TRUE Certified for Zero Waste, meaning we recycle or repurpose at least 90% of materials that enter, diverting them away from landfills, incineration (waste-to-energy), and the environment. In 2022, we reduced plastic shipping materials by 70%. The plastic we do use in packaging for our owned brands and shipping for all member orders is Plastic Neutral Certified through our partnership with rePurpose Global, which recovers as much plastic from nature as our materials create.
This point evaluates a company’s contributions to its employees’ financial security, health & safety, wellness, career development, and engagement & satisfaction.
Even as a remote-first company, Thrive Market employees gain a sense of community through employee resource groups (ERGs). To date, our ERGs include:
This evaluates a company’s engagement with and impact on the communities in which it operates, hires from, and sources from, recognizing business models that are designed to address specific community-oriented problems.
To date, we’ve raised $17 million in healthy groceries, both for local communities in need and for the nonprofit partners who help further our reach. Our Thrive Gives program qualifies families in financial need—including students, teachers, veterans, nurses, and first responders—a free one-year membership to Thrive Market. We also recently became the first online-only grocery store to accept SNAP EBT.
This evaluates a company’s stewardship of its customers through the quality of its products and services, ethical marketing, data privacy and security, and feedback channels.
Our focus on members drives everything we do, from accepting SNAP EBT to giving free memberships to families in need. To us, our customers are our community, and we’re consistently dedicated to providing healthy and affordable groceries to all people.
