Homemade, Cadbury-Like Chocolate Creme Eggs (Gluten-Free & Paleo)

Last Update: October 2, 2025

Few treats evoke nostalgia quite like a chocolate crème egg — the creamy center, the crisp shell, the joy in every bite. For many, the Cadbury classic is a seasonal delight, but stores don’t carry a truly clean version. That’s why making homemade chocolate crème eggs that feel Cadbury-like, yet are gluten-free and paleo, is so satisfying.

Recreating that iconic creamy interior inside a chocolate shell requires technique: blending nut milks or coconut cream with just enough binder, then tempering or coating in rich chocolate. This homemade version gives you full control — no artificial ingredients, no hidden gluten, and a flavor that taps into your favorite holiday memories. With smooth centers and crisp shells, they deliver that same contrast of texture and decadence.

These eggs shine at Easter, for gift boxes, or as an indulgent treat whenever you crave something imaginative and elegant. Bring out a batch, let the creamy center surprise friends and family, and prove that old-school candy magic can thrive in clean-ingredient form.

Recipe Ingredients

Recipe Instructions

  1. Place coconut and cashew butter in bowl of stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-low until creamy and no clumps are left.
  2. Mix in honey, vanilla, salt, and orange blossom water, if using. Combine well.
  3. Scoop out 1/4 of batter into a small bowl and mix in yellow food coloring. Knead the mixture until it’s evenly yellow.
  4. Cover both bowls (white and yellow batter) and place in freezer 20 minutes.
  5. When mixture has chilled, scoop out and roll yellow mixture into 3/4-inch balls. Place again in freezer to harden, 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Scoop 1 1/2 tablespoons of white batter into your palm and flatten it. Place a yellow ball in the center, and fold white batter up and around to fully enclose the yellow ball.
  7. Roll into a circle, form into an oblong egg shape, then place again in freezer to harden. Continue until all the eggs are formed.
  8. Melt the chocolate in a medium-sized bowl and let cool slightly.
  9. Working in batches, dip each chilled egg into the melted chocolate, allow excess chocolate to run off, then place onto parchment-lined baking sheet or cooling rack.
  10. Let chill in fridge 10 minutes until the chocolate sets.

Chocolate Creme Egg Variations & Recipe Tips

  • Flavor infusion: Add orange, mint, or coffee extract to your filling for a twist on the classic flavor.
  • Nut butter center: Blend a spoonful of almond or cashew butter into the cream center for richness and depth.
  • Thinner shell: Use tempered chocolate or dip twice lightly to get a Cadbury-like crisp shell.
  • Dairy-free cream swap: Use full-fat coconut cream or cashew cream for a smooth, rich center in place of dairy.
  • Half-size eggs: Use mini molds to make smaller bonbon versions for bite-sized treats.
  • Freeze before unmolding: Chill eggs solid in freezer first for easier removal from molds and cleaner edges.

Best Chocolate Creme Egg Pairings

  • Espresso or rich coffee — bitterness pairs beautifully with the sweet creamy center.
  • Fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries) — tart fruit cuts through the chocolate richness.
  • Sea salt flakes — sprinkle on top for contrast and complexity.
  • Mint leaves or mint tea — refreshing contrast to dense chocolate cream.
  • Nut milk (almond, cashew)** — sip alongside for creamy harmony.
