Last Update: November 5, 2024
In 2014, Thrive Market started with a mission to make healthy and sustainable living easy and affordable for everyone. 10 years, more than 1.5 million members, and countless boxes of healthy groceries later, our community has proved it’s a mission that matters.
To celebrate 10 years of Thrive Market, we’re looking back at some of the moments that brought us to where we are today — thanks to the support of our thriving community.
We’re here today because of our members. Here’s what they love most about Thrive Market.
A lot can happen in a decade. Take a look at the moments that have defined the last 10 years.
From day 1 to day 3,650, Thrive Gives: Every annual membership purchased sponsors a free one-year membership for a teacher, nurse, first responder, student, veteran, or family in financial need. Beyond donating memberships, our Thrive Gives program guides our goal to democratize access to healthy food and work toward Food Equality Now.
Changing the food system for the better isn’t only about access; it’s about creating a healthier future for our planet, too. That’s why we started with a commitment to sustainability, sending all boxes with carbon-neutral ground shipping and following zero-waste practices at our warehouses.
Around here, we’re more than a little obsessed with quality. It’s led to our industry-leading quality standards that guide our expert team’s meticulous approach to the 5,000+ products we carry. From prioritizing organic certification to restricting 1,000+ ingredients, our standards ensure that our members can trust our curated selection for their families and our planet.
One year after our founding, we were ready to put our stamp on quality and launch the first item with our name on it, knowing it had to be the best product at the most affordable price. A member-favorite to this day, Thrive Market Organic Coconut Oil is made with just one ingredient: cold-pressed, ethically sourced, organic coconuts sourced from suppliers who pay and treat workers fairly.
After that first jar of Organic Coconut Oil flew off our virtual shelves, we got busy building Thrive Market brands — so busy that we reached more than 650 products across our four brands. Today, we offer everything members need to stock a healthy home: organic and non-GMO pantry and home essentials, humanely raised meat and sustainable seafood, trusted supplements, plant- and mineral-powered cleaning, and cruelty-free skin and body care. Every item is made with quality you trust at affordable prices you love.
Our mission has always been paramount to who we are as a company, but there was a key achievement we sought to make it official: B Corp certification. B Corps use business as a force for good, making sure people and planet are just as important to a company as profit. We celebrated our B Corp certification in October 2020, then took our commitment one major step forward in 2023 when we converted to a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). This legal designation allows for-profit companies to prioritize a greater social mission and balance profits with purpose. We’re the largest grocery store in the U.S. that’s taken on this level of responsibility, and we’re proud to push our industry toward the socially and environmentally responsible direction on which our future depends.
We celebrated a new milestone for our ever-growing community when a Thrive Market box arrived at our millionth Thrive Market member’s home in 2021. From medical student Yoshi in Los Angeles to freelance graphic designer Andrea in Oklahoma City to veteran and mom of twins Roxanne in Rhode Island, Thrive Market members span the country, proving that healthy food belongs in every zip code. Today, our thriving community has grown to more than 1.5 million members.
We seek out respected sustainability certifications to further our commitments to the planet while holding ourselves accountable to our practices. In 2021, our warehouses became TRUE Certified for Zero Waste, meaning we recycle or repurpose at least 90% of materials that enter our doors. The next year, we celebrated not one, but two more sustainability achievements: We became Climate Neutral Certified through Change Climate and Plastic Neutral Certified through rePurpose Global.
Every year, we’re required to show our progress to re-certify. As part of our Climate Neutral certification, we measure, reduce, and compensate for 100% of carbon emissions generated from making and delivering our products each year. And our Plastic Neutral certification through rePurpose Global means we measure how much plastic we use in shipping materials for all member orders and product packaging for all Thrive Market brands, then recover that same amount of plastic from nature each year.
Almost a decade in, our phones started to get busy. In 2022, we were honored to be included on the TIME100 list of the most influential companies of the year. Since then, we’ve been proud to show up on even more lists, from Good Housekeeping’s 2024 best snacks featuring Thrive Market Regeneratively Grown Organic Dark Chocolate Covered Brazil Nuts to the 12th annual CNBC Disruptor 50 list in 2024 that celebrates innovative companies that set (and reach!) big goals.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is the largest federal nutrition assistance program in the U.S. that provides food benefits to low-income families and helps them afford their monthly grocery bills. As an online-only store, Thrive Market didn’t immediately qualify to accept SNAP EBT, so in 2016, we partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to start the work toward bringing benefits online. It took almost a decade of advocacy, but in early 2024, we were proud to become the first online-only retailer to welcome SNAP EBT, making it much easier for millions of families nationwide to access the healthy food they need. In addition to using SNAP EBT on thousands of organic and sustainable products at Thrive Market, EBT cardholders also qualify for a free one-year Thrive Market membership through Thrive Gives.
In 2020, we pledged to raise and donate $10 million in healthy groceries by 2025 to help democratize access to healthy living. Our community showed up with even more generosity than we expected, and we reached that $10 million goal two years early in 2023. So what did we do? We turned around and set a new goal to raise $20 million for food equality by 2030.
Every donation supports our members and partners across the country: in grocery discounts and stipends for Thrive Gives members to use on our site; with donations to our nonprofit partners, FoodCorps and FoodCycle LA, that provide education and food access programs in high-need areas across the country; and in food and product donations following natural disasters. To date, we’ve raised more than $16 million in healthy groceries, racing toward our new $20 million goal. We won’t stop until healthy food in the U.S. is a priority — not a privilege.
Looking back on a decade of thriving, one thing is clear: Members make our mission possible. Together, we’re making healthy and sustainable living easy and affordable for everyone — and we can’t wait to see what the next 10 years bring.
