Dye-Free Halloween Pumpkin Popcorn Balls (No Scary Ingredients Here!)

Sweet, salty, crunchy, and chewy, these homemade Halloween treats are an equally sweet alternative to store-bought Halloween candy—but with better-for-you ingredients.

These dye-free Halloween pumpkins contain absolutely no artificial food dyes; instead, they get their vibrant orange color from turmeric mixed with vegan marshmallows for an ooey, gooey texture. Wholesome popcorn, seeds, and pretzel sticks create a crunchy base, while a melted organic chocolate drizzle adds some extra sweetness. It’s the perfect dye-free Halloween treat for school parties, and it makes a kid-friendly Halloween recipe to make together as a family.

Best of all? You can make a batch in just about 20 minutes!

Dye-Free Halloween Pumpkin Popcorn Balls Recipe

Active Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Yield: 16 balls

Ingredients

½ cup Thrive Market Organic Chocolate Chunks
Thrive Market Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray
8 cups Thrive Market Movie Theater Popcorn, popped (or popcorn of choice!)
½ cup pretzel sticks, roughly broken
¼ cup Thrive Market Organic Sunflower Seeds (or pumpkin seeds)
¼ cup Thrive Market Organic Thompson Seedless Raisins
¼ cup butter
1 10-ounce bag Dandies Organic Vanilla Mini Marshmallows
¼ teaspoon Thrive Market Organic Turmeric
¼ teaspoon Thrive Market Organic Ground Cinnamon
½ teaspoon Thrive Market Organic Pure Vanilla Extract

Instructions

Chop about 1 heaping teaspoon of the chocolate chunks into finer pieces; set aside. You’ll use these later to temper the melted chocolate.

Lightly coat the inside of a large mixing bowl with cooking spray of choice so the marshmallow mixture won’t stick to the sides.

Add the popcorn, broken pretzel sticks, sunflower seeds, and raisins to the bowl. No need to mix yet—the marshmallow mixture will help everything combine evenly.

Line a cookie sheet or large plate with parchment paper and set aside.

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Once more than halfway melted, add the turmeric and cinnamon and stir until fully combined. Warming (or “blooming”) the turmeric in the butter brings out its yellow-orange color.

Add the marshmallows and vanilla extract; mix well.

Lower the heat to low and stir continuously. The marshmallows will melt slowly at first, then quickly—watch closely so they don’t scorch. Once fully melted, the mixture should look smooth, creamy, and bright yellow-orange, and cling slightly to the sides of the pot. For a deeper orange, stir in a touch more turmeric.

Remove from heat and pour immediately over the popcorn mixture. Fold everything together, pressing gently, until evenly coated and the popcorn is still warm but cool enough to handle.

Lightly spray your hands with cooking spray. Form the mixture into tight, smooth balls (about tennis ball sized). Place on the prepared tray and refrigerate until firm.

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the remaining ⅓ cup chocolate chunks, stirring gently to prevent scorching. Once nearly melted with just a few small chunks left, remove from heat, stir in the reserved chopped chocolate, and mix quickly (the residual heat will finish melting it and temper the batch for a shinier, crisper set).

Remove the popcorn balls from the fridge and drizzle with the melted chocolate. Let sit at room temperature until the chocolate fully sets.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge. Chilling firms them up; for a softer bite, let them sit out a few minutes before eating.
