Burt's Bees (11)

For its skin care line, Burt’s Bees believes sources sustainable ingredients from around the world and supports research, education, and conservation projects through the The Burt’s Bees Foundation.

There’s been a lot of buzz around Burt’s Bees over the years, and rightly so. Since 1984, this natural skin care brand has been formulating products to nurture your face and body without disrupting the planet along the way, which is one of the reasons it’s garnered such a large, devoted following. As you might imagine with a name like Burt’s Bees, these little insects play a pretty essential role in all of the products. In addition to making honey, beeswax, and royal jelly, bees pollinate much of the food we eat and are essential for ecosystems to thrive. To help keep the bee populations growing, Burt’s Bees has supported research, education, and conservation projects through the The Burt’s Bees Foundation.

The History of Burt’s Bees

Burt’s Bees was founded by Maine artist Roxanne Quimby and Burt Shavitz, who kept beehives locally. Before creating skin care products (the first product to hit shelves was the now-iconic lip balm), they made beeswax candles to sell at local craft fairs. Today, you can choose from all kinds of skin care products like soaps, lotions, and pigmented lip glosses.

Burt’s Bees Company Mission

Burt’s Bees believes what you put on your body should be made from the best ingredients found in nature. Unlike other brands, Burt’s Bees has what it calls a triple bottom line. That means in addition to looking out for profits, the company also considers people (that’s you!) and the planet in all its decision making.

Benefits of Burt’s Bees

Burt’s Bees handpicks many of its ingredients like raw almonds, aloe, cotton, and lavender, to name a few. The company sources ingredients from all over the world, and is guided by a commitment to sustainability. In 2012, Burt’s Bees launched a program called “Community Sourced,” which conducts deep dives into the local regions where indigenous ingredients grow, then works to develop mutually beneficial partnerships with the farmers and communities in those areas. The packaging is also designed with sustainability in mind, especially when it comes to using post-consumer recycled content (PCR) whenever possible. Currently, the brand’s packaging ranges from 34 percent to 71 percent PCR content, depending on the product, and Burt’s Bees continues to make advancements in this area, working with suppliers to come up with eco-friendly solutions.
