Why You’ll Love Organic Dark Chocolate- 85% Cocoa
Take it easy tonight and relax with a bar of Theo Organic Dark Chocolate, accompanied by a glass of red wine. Perfect to have after a long day, a romantic evening, or a sweet afternoon treat. Theo Organic Dark Chocolate is unbelievably deep, rich, complex, smooth, and provocative. This is because it’s made up of mostly cocoa—85% in fact—making it a deliciously extravagant candy bar. A lot of dark chocolates have don’t even come close to that amount, usually containing only 50% cocoa.
After working and traveling throughout the tropics of Central America and Africa, Joe Whinney (founder of Theo) became infatuated with the land and the people that farmed there. He recognized injustice they faced and wanted to do something to make a difference. Over the next 10 years Joe worked nonstop to promote organic cocoa beans in the United States and support Fair Trade practices for those who farmed the cocoa beans. Through this period he built lifelong relationships and a solid foundation of trust with different farmer groups, while simultaneously focused on his dream of making chocolate of his very own and sharing his passion with others.
To make Theo chocolate, every single cocoa bean is grown sustainably all throughout Peru and the Democratic Republic of Congo in ways that empowers biodiversity, as well as positively impact the livelihoods of the farmers they buy from. All of their cocoa beans are rigorously tested by certified third parties and are verified to ensure they meet their impeccably high standards for social and environmental responsibility.
Theo and their team of chocolatiers are constantly striving to make improvements to their organic dark chocolate. To do this, they watch carefully as the cocoa beans are cleaned, roasted, and go through an extensive production process to become dark chocolate. Once processed, Theo places their organic dark chocolate bar in a package made of recycled fibers to lessen the negative impact on the environment.

To put it simply, fair trade means that the prices that manufacturers pay for goods are economically sustainable to farmers in developing countries.
In addition to increasing wealth and reducing poverty, fair trade has several other goals: One of the major goals is to provide ethical treatment for farmers in these developing countries to ensure they are treated fairly, and with respect. Another goal is to practice farming techniques that are environmentally friendly.
Theo Organic Dark Chocolate has been certified organic. What does that mean?
The USDA is the US Department of Agriculture—they oversee our laws and regulations related to farming and food. If something has been certified as organic by the USDA, that means the food someone is about to eat was produced at a farm or manufacturer that adheres to a strict set of governmental guidelines: protect the environment, improve the wellbeing of animals, and avoid the use of chemical additives.
USDA organic guidelines are immense and cover the food from farm to table. To achieve organic certification, farmers must agree to site inspections. Organic certification ensures that the soil used to make the food is of quality, the water used the produce the food is pure, and that farmers refrain from using genetically modified organisms. Theo is immensely proud to say that their organic dark chocolate is completely organic, and tastes amazing!
A quick history of chocolate
Believe it or not, chocolate was discovered by the Aztecs about 4,000 years ago. They thought it was holy and a gift of their god, Quetzalcoatl, and aside from eating it would use it as a form of currency.
Chocolate arrived in Europe during the reign of Henry the VIII where it thrived as a delicacy amongst members of high society. European explorers and immigrants brought chocolate around the world on their long journeys, eventually finding its way to America where it has become an iconic treat over the last century.
Difference between dark chocolate and regular chocolate
The primary difference between dark chocolate and regular chocolate is the amount of cocoa present. Theo Organic Dark Chocolate is made of 85% cocoa, while regular milk chocolate has somewhere around 10%. Simply put, dark chocolate has a higher concentration of cocoa beans than regular milk chocolate. This abundance of cocoa is what is responsible for supplying Theo Organic Dark Chocolate with a deeper rich flavor that is complex.
Dark chocolate health benefits
When paired with a balanced and sensible diet, chocolate is full of vital nutrients that the body uses to function at its very best. Eating a bar of Theo organic dark chocolate bars will provide a hearty amount of nutrients such as fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, potassium, and zinc. But the benefits don’t stop there:
- Heart healthy: A study examined over 31,000 Swedish women over the course of 9 years and discovered that by eating dark chocolate with a balanced and sensible diet, some women were able to cut their risk for heart disease by a third. This is because dark chocolate contains large amounts of antioxidants that the body uses to protect the heart.
- Weight loss: Researches from the University of Copenhagen did a study and found that dark chocolate makes people feel fuller so that they don’t overeat. They also found that eating dark chocolate may reduce cravings for salty, sweet, or fatty unhealthy foods.

PURE CHOCOLATE WITHOUT SOY!!! IT IS TASTY AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT!!!
Delicious Happy Chocolate
I love love love Theo dark chocolate, such high quality & robust flavor
still my favorite
I've been chowing down on this bar since I first encountered Theo in Seattle (where the factory is) years ago. I'm ever-impressed by the lack of fillers and serious chocolate flavor without super high prices. I also love the serious dedication to fair trade practices. In my opinion, this bar is the best cross section of value and flavor I've encountered thus far. Certainly I partake of other bars on occasion, but I always keep a stash of this one on hand.
A great basic, clean dark chocolate at a great price.
Amazing Non-GMO chocolate!
This chocolate bar is amazing! I try to purchase Non-GMO products whenever I can. This chocolate bar is smooth and rich, melt in your mouth kind of chocolate bar, don't call it candy! It's too good for that name.
With my Thrive Market membership, these Theo organic dark chocolate has moved from a "treat" now and then, to a must-have staple! I shave it for topping ice cream and yogurt, break it apart in to tiny pieces and use in cookie dough, I also melt it for other dishes. So delicious and to know it's a healthy type snack, even better!

Great product for price
Sure, you can buy a plain old candy bar for under one dollar still, but you aren't getting the quality product and taste you get with Theo. That makes it worth the price.
Plus, when you are eating good chocolate, you will find that less is more. In other words, I can make this candy bar last a whole week, but a hershey's bar would be gone in minutes and I'd still have the craving.
I love Fair Trade chocolate and Theo is one of my favorite brands. The 85% is a bit strong, but I really like it once I got used to it.
Dark chocolate is great with fruit and wine, so I enjoy buying Theo to serve at my wine and cheese art parties. Everyone loves it, and those that thought they didn't like dark chocolate always walk out with a different attitude toward it.

High-Quality Dark Chocolate
Amazing chocolate taste. They don't taste like milk chocolate, but they taste like really good, high-quality dark chocolate. Like many chocolate bars, it has the "built-cut" bars that you can break off and eat. I find that only one or two bars ends up satisfying my entire chocolate craving. I love that it's so high in fiber and protein without having a ton of sugar like lots of chocolate bars do.
Plus, Thrive has an amazing price on this. I've only been able to find it for more than $5 at most online retailers. Now I don't feel nearly as bad about purchasing this all the time to eat.
A little bitter
I love chocolate, and especially dark chocolate. Theo makes high quality chocolate bars, but this one is a little strong and bitter for my taste.
The bar I bought I ended up melting in my cream of rice so that I could temper down the flavor some. It did taste great that way. I may try it in some chocolate chunk cookies in the future.
Not as good as ritter sport
I've been a big Ritter Sport chocolate fan for years, but my husband bought these from Thrive, a site he's on a lot. I didn't mind trying something new, after all, dark chocolate is my favorite.
I'm afraid to say Theo's ok, not very sweet and made from organic products, but not at the level at Ritter sport. Could be subjective, my husband loves these chocolates, but to me they're just ok.
Bitter but sweet tasting
I like dark chocolate, because I enjoy that bitter, coffee like aftertaste. Milk chocolate is overly sweet and leaves a film on your teeth.
Not so with Theo dark chocolate. Their bars are not very sweet, and they almost taste like baking chocolate. They pack a punch, though, and fill you up. Just a bar is enough to stop your sugar craving.

Love dark chocolate, and used to eat Lindt, but I wanted something healthier. I found Thrive online, and noticed they had a bunch of healthy food and drink.
Amazon has these in packs of 6 and solo. Theyre asking $7.88 for one bar. You'll notice Thrive's selling the same bar for $2.85. That's more than five dollars difference! At this rate, I'll pay for my Thrive membership on their discounts in a few months.
