Why You’ll Love Organic Tomato Paste
No matter how you pronounce it, it’s hard to resist a perfectly ripe, bright red tomato. When whole, they can be cut up and used for a variety of salads and salsas; but pureed, tomato paste provides even more options as a base for soups, sauces, chilis, and other hearty dishes.
Finding a good tomato paste can be tricky, though, since some taste like they are straight from the can rather than straight from the vine. But not with Bionaturae who jars their certified organic and gluten-free variety with a tight seal and no added salt in order to preserve the freshness and pure taste of the fruit.
The name Bionaturae roughly translates to “organic nature,” and the company follows that protocol by using some of the finest tomatoes grown in the rich, sun-kissed soil of Italy, which is free of both chemicals and pesticides. Bionaturae’s products, including pastas, olive oils, and sauces, are made on a small scale, lovingly crafted by local purveyors that use traditional production methods handed down for generations.
Not only do they celebrate old world tradition with authentic processes and recipes, but they also have a heartfelt devotion to the highest quality ingredients that maximize health benefits for consumers.
What does organic mean?
Organic is a word that gets thrown around quite a lot these days. Stroll down any grocery store aisle, and it seems there is an organic variety for almost every product—but what does the term actually mean and how does it change the food we eat?
The rules vary from country to country, but the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) stipulates that for a food to be labeled organic, it must be “produced using sustainable agricultural production practices.” It must be free of pesticides, fertilizers with synthetic ingredients, sewage sludge, bioengineering, and ionizing radiation, and the use of GMOs is strictly forbidden.
Bionaturae’s tomato paste is certified organic, meaning that the passion for what they do is not an empty claim. In fact, it means the company must trace and document the process of the food from beginning to end. That includes yearly on-site inspections and evaluations of seed sources, weed and pest management, and crop health to ensure guidelines are being followed for recertification.
Why organic tomatoes matter
There are plenty of reasons to opt for organic produce—especially with tomatoes because they possess an incredibly thin skin. The problem with that is, a thin skin can allow pesticides to easily break the barrier and seep into the fruit when traditional farming applications are used. Even a good wash can still leave traces of chemicals lurking underneath the surface.
Pesticide exposure can cause serious health problems, and people who consume non-organic produce likely have had some form of exposure. In a 2013 study done by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), almost two-thirds of produce samples tested by the USDA were found to contain pesticides.
Even some interaction can result in nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, anxiety, and confusion. Exposure can also be associated with a slew of other issues, including respiratory problems, memory disorders, skin conditions, depression, miscarriage, birth defects, cancer, and neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease.
The amazing health benefits of tomatoes
Organic tomatoes don’t just minimize the intake of detrimental chemicals, but they also maximize some of the wonderful health benefits of the fruit. Tomatoes are an excellent source of:
- Vitamin C. High blood levels of Vitamin C lead to prime health. It can help prevent complications from the common cold such as pneumonia or lung issues, and support a weakened immune system that has been affected by stress. Additionally, vitamin C keeps the skin hydrated and looking young. All tomatoes offer this essential nutrient, but organic varieties have an even higher concentration.
- Lycopene. This powerful antioxidant actually gives tomatoes their red hue, and you might notice by the brighter batches that there is a much higher amount in organic varieties. Lycopene is responsible for maintaining the strength of cell membranes, which in turn allows good nutrients into the body and keeps bad toxins from entering. As such, it’s a wonderful way to help prevent many common medical issues such as heart disease, infertility, diabetes, cataracts, and osteoporosis. Tomatoes are the primary source of lycopene, so eat up!
- Kaempferol. Kaempferol is an important flavonoid that is found to have 97% higher concentrations in organic tomatoes. It offers anti-inflammatory benefits and can help prevent cancer and aid in lung-related issues.
Organic tomatoes are eco-friendly
As if there weren’t already enough reasons to go with organic tomatoes, it’s also important to remember their impact on the environment. Tomatoes grown with pesticides are fertilized at a significantly faster rate, potentially leading to soil that will become depleted of all of its valuable nutrients. On the other hand, organic farms cycle their crops carefully, making sure that the land can be used for many seasons in the future.
USDA-certified organic farms also:
- Support animal health and welfare. Organic livestock is treated well, including plenty of outdoor space to move around, and farms believe that happy animals produce the best products.
- Only use USDA approved materials, which are regularly inspected.
- Don’t use genetically modified ingredients (GMOs).
- Separate organic food from non-organic food. While some farms produce both, certified organic food must have its own designated equipment for processing.
Cooking with Bionaturae Organic Tomato Paste
There are plenty of creative applications for tomato paste beyond the go-tos like pasta and soups. You can also use a jar for veggie ratatouille, huevos rancheros, slow-cooked roast beef, and Spanish rice. Here are two more ideas to try:
Are you dining at home or at the steakhouse? With this elegant dinner, it will be hard to tell. The Spanish-inspired dish, which slathers chops with a hearty sauce made of tomato paste, bell peppers, garlic, and other spices, is incredibly easy to prepare, too, so don’t just save it for special occasions.
Comfort food alert! This baked meatball dish is just like grandma’s, except without the addition of starchy noodles, which makes it a healthful choice and compliant for Paleo eaters.

Best Tomato Paste!
I love this tomato paste, it's hard to find good tomato paste in a jar, and the price on thrive is much better than you can find on Amazon. It's very high quality and if you don't use it all you can just screw the cap back on and put it in the fridge for later use.
Organic Tomato Paste
It's organic and it's in a glass jar!
Great flavor in a variety of recipes
I use this in everything from soups, stews, Paleo meatloaf, to my favorite Paleo Italian recipes. It was difficult to find a similar product without sugar. This hits all the requirements for Paleo and taste so good.
Organic Tomato Paste
Love an organic product in a glass jar! I add this to Jovial Organic crushed tomatoes and flavor to fit the taste of the dinner I'm making.
How wonderful, a glass container. I don't have to worry about chemicals from a can. And nonGMO, and organic. Cannot get any better.
organic tomato paste
tastes good on toast and pasta noodles

After joining Thrive I discovered this tomato paste - in glass jars, yaaay! It's so tasty, I use a half jar for most recipes I used to use a whole can for, and freeze the left over half for next time. It's got a good tomato taste, not bitter like canned stuff often is, I'll be buying this from now on.
This is really good tasting and the best part is the recyclable glass jar. I can use a tablespoon in a recipe and save the rest for later. Then recycle the jar! Can't beat it!
Haven't used yet, but will soon.
Never Without Organic Tomato Paste
This is a great tomato paste, I always have an extra in the cupboard so I don't run out.
I wasn't expecting to like this based on the reviews that it wasn't so "paste-like", but I DO!! Very tasty and goes just as far. Bonus - it is easier to get out of the container and it isn't in a can so less food contact with can liners which all have chemicals.
Flavorful, but not thick
Delicious and fresh but be aware it is more watery than you would expect a paste to be. Therefore, you will need to buy more of the product to get the actual quantity you'd find in a denser product.
Best tomato paste ever!
This is the best tomato paste for flavor and ingredients and it's in a glass jar rather than a can! I have used this brand for years and love that it's sold on Thrive!
no tin taste
Love the Jar
I love the fact the tomato paste is in a jar. Organic, glass jar, great taste without the added nonsense that other brands use. Thank you for pure wholesome food that I can feed to my family.
This tomato paste is awesome. Not only does it taste good, you can use a little and put it in the refrigerator for another meal. Love the glass jar!!!
I love this brand! Organic, glass bottle and very vibrant taste without a bunch of added salt.
Hi- I love your company and recommend you to all my clients. I just hate your packaging and feel like there is waste. Is there anything you can do? Thanks
Waste Less Tomato Paste
Don't you hate to open a can for two tablespoons of tomato paste? The jar can be kept in the fridge and the quality is excellent.
Best tomato paste!
I love that this tomato paste is in a jar! Who needs a chemically laden can? And the taste is very fresh
Tomato paste in a jar - brilliant
Love the ingredients (specifically the lack of unnecessary ingredients) and the fact that it's organic. The taste and texture seemed comparable to other pastes to me. But love the fact that I can reseal the jar after using a few Tablespoons instead of being left with an opened can =)
LOVE LOVE this product
This is by far the best tomato paste I have ever used, the flavor is fresh and clean and works wonderful in my recipes.
This is the best tomato paste. We use it in everything - homemade ketchup, spaghetti, pizza, tomato soup. LOVE IT!
Simply the best of the best!
We have used this for years and find it to far surpass the flavor and ingredient quality of any other brand. Love that it comes in a glass jar!
Jars over Cans!
This is great tomato paste. While it's not as thick as some of the kind you would find in a can at the store; I'm actually a fan of that because it's easier to get out of the jar. It's also great that it's literally nothing but tomato paste! No HFCS, no Citric acid, no mysterious "natural flavor", just tomatoes!
Call me a snob, but really enjoy that this Tomato paste is imported from Italy. I spent a semester there, and they are fanatical about the quality of their food, which definitely shows in this product!

WAY better than canned!
First off, this tastes way different (in a great way) than other canned tomato pasted I've had, even other organic brands. And It's so convenient to have it in a resealable container--no more plastic-wrapped cans in the fridge! It's a tiny bit bigger than the standard canned paste, but I was apprehensive at first because it was also a little thinner too. But the flavor was significantly heartier than its canned counterparts. I particularly liked how it wasn't as sweet as other pastes (maybe because the tomatoes are from Italy?) which, in my opinion, makes it easier to use in a wider variety of dishes. I'm glad they don't include any added sugar or salt, just straight up organic tomato, and I can definitely taste the difference. The tomato flavor comes through so much stronger when I use it to make vodka sauce and it was absolutely divine over some whole wheat pasta. Overall, I found that even though it was a little thinner, it was so much more flavorful and it actually went further in my cooking than other pastes I've tried. So glad I found this!

Better than canned paste!
This definitely beats tomato paste in a can. The flavor and consistency are more authentic...tangy and less thick.
Although I prefer a thicker paste, I rest assured this has no additives or enhancements.
- A. Davis
This is my first time trying tomato paste out of a jar as I usually use cans and it completely changes the taste (in a good way)! This paste is a lot less thick than the canned paste I'm used to using and the color is also lighter. I used it to make bolognese sauce and it tasted amazing!
I grew up on home made tomato paste and this tastes just about the same. I definitely recommend this product to anyone trying to replicate an authentic tomato paste.

Jars > Cans
When you buy tomatoes in cans, their acidity can leach the lining and in turn contaminate the tomato. That being said, I have made is my objective to buy jar'ed tomatoes rather than cans. I have been happy so far and the tomatoes taste great!
The reason I gave 4 stars was because of a manufacturer error. For some reason a few of my jars already had the air-seal broken. I live in Colorado and they shipped from Los Angeles, so it might have been an air pressure issue. Thrive customer service was quick to help though! I would buy again!
- R. Roberts
I found this tomato paste to be rich in tomato flavor without the bitter after taste of most commercial preparations. I also appreciate the glass container which did not add any tinny flavor
Great Pantry Staple
Concentrated tomato paste, tangy and great to have on hand for soups, chilli, etc.
Great price, fantastic product, healthy packaging. Using this from now on.
Love that it comes Ina glass jar and is organic. Works just like any tomato paste but tastes better than canned. You can actually taste the tomato.
I bought this brand due to the fact it is the only one I could find that came in glass. No yucky bpa or other chemicals to worry about. I almost always buy organic but even organic canned foods can have bpa liners. As a bonus, I was pleasantly surprised at how great this tomato paste tastes. Will be my go to paste for chili from now on!
I’m really happy using this product and I recommend it.
BPA free, it last a long time in the refrigerator and it’s organic. It makes a really good tomato paste for my recipes. It has a real and consistent tomato flavor. Affordable and made in Italy. I’m really happy using this product and I recommend it.
- Irma Glover
Love the glass container!
This is pretty much the only tomato paste we found which is packaged in glass containers, and it's yummy too. Tastes nice the clean and organic.
- Regina Figueroa
A new staple
I love that this tomato paste comes in a glass jar. No BPA, no sharp edges, no no mess and no waste. The paste has a deep flavor that's a bit less sweet, and is less dense than the other tomato pastes I've used, so it's easier to work with too. It's definitely my new paste for tomato sauce and tomato soup.
