It’s the second largest appellation in France (behind Bordeaux) and has been cultivated for thousands of years, starting when ancient Greeks planted vineyards near Marseilles in 400 B.C. The southern Rhône region, where Domaine Roche Audran is located, is a popular area for Grenache grapes that thrive when cool, powerful winds come up from the coast. This varietal has concentrated fruit flavor and is known for being bold, intense, and full-bodied.

The History of Domaine Roche Audran

Domaine Roche Audran’s vineyard is planted among lavender fields and olive groves in France’s Rhône Valley. Winemaker Vincent Rochette has overseen the estate, which boasts vines up to 100 years old, since 1998. Organic and biodynamic practices are standard here, and the winery is certified by both Ecocert and Demeter. Take a stroll through the property and you’ll find horses grazing in the winter, and honey being cultivated year-round. Rochette calls this approach following the “cosmic rhythms,” sharing that “in order to maximize the pure expression of these fabulous terroirs through our wines, we use only natural products. This approach enables us to maintain the fertility of the soils and to protect our vines and the nature surrounding them.” Today, the estate houses approximately 86 acres of vines spread over three terroirs: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vaison La Romaine, and Visan.
