Why You’ll Love Cacao Nibs

If you enjoy the taste of chocolate but want to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthier way, then Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs is just the thing! With an intense, rich chocolate flavor, you’ll want to sprinkle these little morsels on top of all of your favorites, like ice creams, yogurts, trail mixes, cookies, and even fruit parfaits. Cacao nibs, also known as “nature’s chocolate chips,” add a hearty crunch and irresistible taste that’s also a wonderful source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

What are cacao nibs?

Make no mistake: cacao nibs are not chocolate chips. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are chocolate in a pure form, before anything else is added. They come from cacao beans and since they have no sugar incorporated into them, they have an intensely deep flavor similar to that of roasted coffee beans. A little bitter and a little bold, they add a great crunch to yogurts and oatmeals along with deep chocolate flavor.

The health benefits of cacao nibs

When people think of cacao, they immediately think of chocolate—which is made from cocoa. Cacao and cocoa certainly sound similar, and to some degree they are. Both derive from the cocoa bean, which is sourced from the pods on the cacao fruit tree.

Cacao butter is the outer lining within each bean—it’s white, and has a taste closer to white chocolate candy bars. This butter is removed from the bean, leaving behind the fruit, and that fruit is what is used to create Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs.

Although cacao and cocoa are fairly similar, there are several differences to be aware of, and these differences can highlight the reasons that Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are the better choice for anyone focused on their health:

  • Cacao is the purest type of chocolate that people can get. It’s a raw version that hasn’t been processed to the extent of cocoa.

  • The processing of cocoa removes many of the antioxidants, and cacao is filled with much higher levels of them.

  • Cacao isn’t subjected to the higher level of heat used to process cocoa. This higher level of heat can lead to lower levels of antioxidants within the cocoa since the heat breaks down compounds and causes additional molecular changes.

Simply put, cacao is good for the human body. Packed with iron, magnesium, and antioxidants, people can find that it’s a surprisingly healthy treat that has the power to...

  • Lower insulin resistance: Insulin helps bodies break down glucose, and people whose bodies have stopped responding normally to insulin often struggle with weight gain. Once this happens, glucose doesn’t get used as fuel but instead builds up in the blood, which can lead to diabetes. To reverse insulin resistance, regular exercise, a good diet, and cacao can improve cell response and lower blood lipid levels.

  • Improve heart health: Flavanols occur naturally in teas and a lot of delicious fruits like apples, grapes, and blueberries, promoting healthy blood vessel function. While tea is probably the most powerful supplier of flavanols, cacao is also a great source. These compounds can have an incredibly positive effect on cardiovascular health and prevent heart disease as well as reduce blood pressure.

  • Protect against free radical damage: Cacao possesses a lot of antioxidants, which protect cells from damage that happens simply because of daily exposure to toxins, stress, sun damage, or inflammation. These things by themselves aren’t going to do a lot of harm, but combined they can lead to bigger health issues down the road. Avoid these risks all together and make sure to get your intake of antioxidants every day.

  • Improve mood: Sure, that chocolatey flavor tastes great, but cacao is scientifically proven to make people feel better. Compounds like phenylethylamine, serotonin, and anandamide boost moods, make people feel alert, and activate pleasure centers in the brain.

Recipes to try with Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs

Enjoy Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs straight from the bag for a flavorful pick-me-up, or sprinkle them into some of your favorite recipes. Generally, they’re used to top desserts or other sweet options, but you can experiment with their robust flavor on more savory bites like popcorn for a memorable, movie treat. Here are a few recipes to try with Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs.

Dandelion-Cacao Latte

Switch up the usual morning beverage routine with this caffeine-free option. Cacao nibs have a naturally smoky flavor similar to coffee beans, so it’s a perfect way to mimic the flavor without getting the jitters. Coconut milk adds in a creaminess, and coconut sugar adds in the right amount of sweetness to wake you up and start the day right. The base is also made from dandelion root tea which can help the body detox and kick that caffeine habit.

Homemade Vegan Chocolate Bars

If you’re throwing a party, these are sure to be a hit! Using ingredients that are probably already in the pantry, you can make your own homemade chocolate vegan treats. Customize them toppings like coconut chips and Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs for bold and decadent taste. Or even throw in some dried fruit, like Nature’s All Foods Organic Freeze Dried Strawberries, to give it a great fruity addition.

Banana-Chocolate Chia Pudding Parfaits

Enjoy pure perfection in this parfait with layers of flavors that is reminiscent of banana cream pie. While it looks mighty impressive with a rich chocolate chia mousse, mashed bananas, and a vanilla chia pudding, it only takes mere minutes to put together! This is a great option for a family dessert or a dinner party with friends.

Trail Mix

Cacao nibs are a superfood, after all, packing in loads of antioxidants and iron. Choose a trail mix you enjoy and throw in some cacao nibs to deepen the flavors, or assemble your own with some of your favorite ingredients. Use Thrive Market Organic Raw Almonds for a buttery nut that will fill you up and Thrive Market Organic Black Mission Figs for a perfectly chewy fruity flavor. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs tossed in trail mix gives it a serious crunch and brings out the mouthwatering flavors of the almonds and figs. To satisfy that salty and sweet craving, dash in some Selina Naturally Pink Celtic Sea Salt.

Cacao Nibs

They do not taste good right out of the bag. Where can I get some recipes for us to use?

- Thrive User

Superior Taste

The best tasting Cacao Nibs I have ever had. They are high quality, full of anti-oxidants and taste great! I love the texture for adding a little crunch to my morning smoothie.

Cacao Nibs

My husband who is a diabetic loves chocolate. These nibs are a healthy and delicious way for him to enjoy chocolate and not worry about sugar.

- Jo-Ann Brightman

Yummy

I love these for my smoothies! They make me feel like I'm eating a treat:))

- Brooke

Good

They seem more like pieces of cracked nuts. No taste to them but they are as natural as it gets. I did try to eat them by themselves and yuck. I did put them in stuff and they were pretty good.

- Wydalis

Yum - paleo nutella!

Ground in a coffee grinder, added to almond butter with a little sea-salt, vanilla, and a dash of maple syrup (or erythritol, or stevia) you have something delicious. I like it better than chocolate - it definitely saved me from succumbing.

The nibs are bitter, almost like eating a coffee bean, but more floral and less acid.

I bought these because of research I read on pubmed about cacao polyphenols improving skin elasticity. I trust the Navitas brand.

- Lena

Love It!

Put this in my Coconut Milk Yogurt! Absolutely yummy!

- Crafty

Not good!

Oh what a horrible surprise these nibs were. Probably one of the most unpleasant tastes I've ever encountered!

- Kelly

Not too tasty

This product is not gonna fix your chocolate cravings. I'm not quite sure how to describe it but it's very dry (so have water handy) and it has what tastes like shell/hull/husk in it that takes away from the natural cocoa/chocolate taste.

- Paul

yummy!

good raw cacao nibs, large bag.

Great with Coffee!

I make fancy coffees every morning with my espresso machine (spoiled, I know) and add a little of cacao on top of it for a rich flavor. I prefer this over syrups because the flavor is more authentic.

I love that this cacao is certified organic and non-GMO. Sometime, if I am feeling way out there, I add a little cinnamon and vanilla power to enhance my coffee experience. The only reason it is not getting 5 stars is the fact that sometimes its a little to bitter. Really depends on my mood though.

- Gladys Dixon

Delicious sub for chocolate cravings

I sprinkle this on a banana with almond butter and it is the perfect snack!

- Deni

Love these!

I put them on everything! Smoothies, yogurt, salads. I love the raw bitter flavor. They are a great no-sugar alternative to real chocolate, especially since my dad has diabetes.

- Stefanie

A snack you can feel good about

Although I wish cacao nibs tasted more like chocolate I still like them. It's a great source of fiber and even antioxidants.

I use my cacao nibs for many of the same things you'd use chocolate chips for. I don't usually eat them alone, but I found they do taste great thrown in my ice cream or smoothies.

- Jess Kilmer

It's not chocolate...

... but you'll be fooled.

I love cacao nibs. I like that I can order great items like this from Thrive Market and they show me right on the page what is in it and what isn't. I am gluten free and I am tired of reading labels. I feel so safe shopping here.

Cacao nibs are great mixed in smoothies and baked goods, or alone.

- Brittni

Great with trail mix

I love these cacao nibs, but instead of eating them alone I mix them in with my trail mixes. I also use them for other things when I am baking.

Cacao nibs make a great healthy replacement for chocolate chips and the kids love them. I wish I could find a recipe using them in fudge!

- Amanda Barriantes

Saving My Diet

These are my diet SAVIOR! The first thing you need to understand is that they don't taste like milk or dark chocolate. They definitely taste like cacao, but it fulfills my chocolate craving in the same way. The second thing that you need to know is that it's a delicious and healthier alternative to chocolate, and they even have some amazing fiber to them.

I've been keeping these in the kitchen in a simple resealable bowl. When I go into the kitchen "looking" for food without a purpose, I eat one of these nibs then sit back down. The nibs make me feel like I had my "snack" while I'm not eating a ton of calories and still having something fulfilling. It's really a great trade-off.

- Patty_Loves_Cakes

A decent alternative

Since I am a dark chocolate fan, complaints about the bitterness of cacao nibs has never turned me off. I don't think they are as good as the real thing, but they make a great chocolate-like snack that isn't packed with sugar.

I actually like to mix my cacao nibs in with ice cream. I also have been known to use them in place of chocolate chips when making cookies. Many don't even notice the difference.

- Gretchen Tran

I loved it.

I am a sweet tooth and I am also on a diet so when I heard about this cacao nibs, I went and tried it for myself. I loved it. At first the smell was kinda off but you get used to it actually. Cacao nibs is like dark chocolate but with better benefits and without the sugar.

- Jerome Caldwell

Too bitter to be great

I've got a pretty good palate, and I'm not scared to try exotic food. So buying a pouch of cacao nibs isn't out of my wheelhouse exactly, although I was surprised at how nervous I was before I popped these into my mouth. It's almost as if I knew they were destined to disappoint.

I wouldn't say the taste is horrible, in fact it's tolerable, but the nibs are really bitter and they leave an aftertaste. You really need to use these as a topping to get the best use of them, but I'm no sure the price justifies what you get in return.

- Randall Hollins

Five Star chocolate

As a reformed chocaholic, I'm always looking for something I can eat without the first ingredient listed being sugar. I've tried Navitas Naturals cacao beans before and liked them, so I figured the nibs might be good too.

I wasn't far off the mark as the nibs are perfect way not to go overboard with chocolate, yet still get the full-bodied flavor of raw chocolate beans with no added sugar.

- Rowena Harwood

Wonderful Taste

These nibs are super crunchy and have a fantastic taste that does have a slight bitter edge. If you want to cut some of that bitterness, sprinkle the nibs over a healthy dessert like a fruit bowl for a change of pace.

Navitas takes care not to put anything inside a pouch but the nibs, which are derived from raw chocolate so there's no artificial sugar to spike your blood. A great way to stay involved with chocolate without all the guilt.

- Ronald H.

Chocolate Superfood!

I've pretty much cut all chocolate out of my diet because I was eating too much sugar and my doctor warned me I was teetering on the edge of diabetes. But I still have a sweet tooth, so these nibs come in very handy.

They have a rich chocolate taste that's wonderful when used in healthy smoothies, on top of almond milk ice cream, or even sprinkled on Greek yogurt. I don't feel guilty crunching on these nibs, knowing they're packed with antioxidants and have no added sugar.
