The History of Thayers

Back in 1847, Dr. Henry Thayer opened a lab in Massachusetts and began developing a line of herbal extracts using organic witch hazel as the key ingredient. At the time of the Civil War, Henry Thayer & Company was one of the largest manufacturers of pharmaceuticals in the United States, and by 1875, it offered more than 800 herbal-based products. Dr. Thayer died in 1902, but the business stayed with the family, shepherded by his great niece who helped make products more accessible to the public through distribution in drug stores. In today’s modern formulas, witch hazel continues to be the key ingredient, sourced from a family farm in nearby Connecticut.
