Pipcorn was born in 2012, when Jeff Martin was helping his sister, Jen move apartments. With everything packed up except a bag of tiny heirloom popcorn kernels that Jen found in the Chicago health food store where she worked, they popped batch after batch of the most delicious popcorn they’d ever had! They liked this one so much, they tracked down the Indiana farmer who grew it from his family’s heirloom seed stock. Together with Jeff’s wife, Teresa, they created a new company.

Pipcorn is proof that one good idea (and exceptional ingredients) can turn into a craveable snack that no one can stop eating.
Pipcorn started in 2012 when Jeff Martin was helping his sister Jen Martin move apartments. The only item that wasn’t packed was a bag of heirloom popcorn kernels she’d found in the Chicago health food store where she worked, and after popping a batch, they declared it to be the best popcorn they’d ever tasted. The siblings ended up tracking down the Indiana farmer who grew it from his family’s heirloom seed stock, and together with Jeff’s wife, Teresa Tsou, the trio launched a brand. They started selling at a shop in Brooklyn, New York with hand-stamped bags filled with popcorn popped in their mom’s spaghetti pot. Later, Pipcorn landed a deal on Shark Tank and was able to bring popcorn to the masses and develop more products like twists and crackers.
Popcorn is a women- and minority-owned family business that makes nutritious snacks from heirloom corn.
For their irresistible snacks, Pipcorn uses heirloom seeds hand-selected by family farmers, resulting in better taste, added nutrition, and environmental sustainability. Pipcorn relies on open pollination, which means plants are pollinated by birds, insects, and wind, allowing pollen between flowers to randomly get swapped around. This process keeps crops genetically diverse, and over time, open-pollinated seeds adapt to local climates and growing conditions, which strengthens the resilience of the genetic line and promotes biodiversity. Plus, the heirloom corn makes for a crunchier and more flavorful snack, and every bite has more fiber and antioxidants than commercially grown hybrids.
