Today, Redmond is well-known for its sea salt, but it didn’t start out as a kitchen staple. In the 1960s, locals in Utah noticed that Redmond salt melted road ice better than traditional white salt, so Redmond began marketing its crushed salt as a premium highway deicing salt called “Ice Slicer.” Eventually, Redmond’s customers began requesting salt they could use in the kitchen, too, so in 1984, Redmond introduced its sea salt brand Real Salt, which remains one of the best selling salts in American health food stores.
In 1958, a drought in Utah forced two farmers to abandon their farm. They knew Native Americans once harvested salt rock from the region, so Milo and Lamar Bosshardt decided to borrow money to purchase sledgehammers and a salt deposit that produced a wonderfully balanced mineral salt. The Redmond salt business was born. Over the years, Redmond’s reputation grew, allowing the brothers to purchase land from their neighbors, which had salt deposits that extended several thousand feet below the earth. Their salt deposit, the result of prehistoric volcanic activity that encased an ancient seabed, provided a naturally-balanced mineral salt that local ranchers credited for healthier herds. As the salt became more popular, the Bosshardt brothers purchased land from their neighbors, giving them access to the entire deposit, estimated to extend several thousand feet below the surface of the earth.
