White wine might be more popular during the summer months, but it’s worth drinking year-round. Whether you’re uncorking a Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Viognier, or other favorite varietal, white wines are typically made with green grapes that are fermented without their skins. It’s not always the case, but many white wines are aged in stainless steel rather than oak (which helps reduce oxygen exposure) and white wine is known for having fewer calories per glass than red, if that’s a consideration for you.
The Most Delicious White Wine Varietals
There’s something for everyone in the world of white wine.
- Chardonnay: Originally from France’s Burgundy region, Chardonnay is grown in many regions in the world and always a winner alongside chicken, fish, or creamy cheeses.
- Chenin Blanc: Chenin Blanc is an acidic, citrusy white from France’s Loire Valley, but is also grown successfully in South Africa, the United States, and Argentina.
- Riesling: This German wine can be either sweet or dry depending on the conditions during harvest. Most are light-bodied with floral, citrus, or stone fruit notes.
- Sauvignon Blanc: These grapes are native to the Loire Valley, but New Zealand gives France a run for its money. No matter its country of origin, this varietal features bright flavors like herbs, citrus, and passion fruit.
